Actress Jennifer Lawrence has played the X-Men character Mystique in two films, 2011’s X-Men: First Class and 2014’s X-Men: Days Of Future Past. However, after she reprises the role in next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, she says it will be her last.
“It is my last one, yes,” Lawrence told MTV News, when asked about her X-Men future beyond the film.
It’s the second X-Men cast member who says Apocalypse would be their final appearance in the franchise. Nicholas Hoult, who played the Beast in First Class and Days of Future Past, told E! Online that the 2016 film was the last movie he was signed up for, but said he wouldn’t rule out returning in future.
While there’s no further details, some reports speculate that X-Men: Apocalypse has been constructed to plan ahead for any potential cast turnover. Characters rejoining the superhero franchise in the movie include Storm, Cyclops and Jean Grey — each played by a new cast of Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan and Sophie Turner, respectively.
If Lawrence departs the franchise, it wouldn’t mean the character Mystique would have to be dropped as well. She is actually the second Mystique to have appeared in the series, following Rebecca Romijn’s appearances in the original X-Men trilogy.
X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled for May 2016.
