Is Donald Glover ending his run in rap as Childish Gambino?
During an interview on Today, while promoting his new film The Lazarus Effect, he revealed that he may be retiring his rap alter ego.
“I guess Childish Gambino is a period in my art time. I want to have periods in my life,” said the 31-year-old rapper. “I feel like Childish Gambino is a period that should come to a close. I like endings.
“I look at my life as something you should be able to paint. I think it is kinda like performance art,” he added.
Glover has released three projects under his Childish Gambino moniker, his latest being 2014’s STN MTN/Kauai.
Despite saying his rap alter ego is coming to an end, he says he will continue to record… even, if he puts out projects quietly. Maybe under another name?
“I always wanna do music,” Glover said. “Like, I love music and I already put out projects, quietly, everywhere and I wanna produce.”
Gambino is scheduled to play festivals this year, including Bonnaroo in June and London’s Wireless Festival in July.
