The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water

American Sniper was finally knocked out of the top spot at the box office this weekend by Paramount’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

The animated Nickelodeon film opened with $56 million. In it, Spongebob and his friends must travel to the surface after a diabolical pirate steals the secret Krabby Patty formula.

American Sniper comes in second this weekend with $24.1 million, bringing its domestic haul to $282.2 million in its fourth week of wide release.

The Wachowskis science-fiction adventure, Jupiter Ascending, opened with just $19 million, despite racking up a $175 million production. It stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis.

The supernatural thriller Seventh Son debuted with just $7.1 million. Starring Jeff Bridges, the film also had a huge budget of nearly $100 million.

And, the animated Paddington closes out the top 5 with $5.3 million and $57.2 million in four weekends.

That’s a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of the anticipated romance Fifty Shades of Grey and and the action-adventure Kingsman: The Secret Service.
