Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has tested positive for anabolic steroids.
The UFC announced Tuesday (Feb. 3) that the 39-year-old tested positive for the steroid drostanolone during a random out-of-competition test, weeks before defeating Nick Diaz at UFC 183. According to ESPN.com, Silva also test positive for a second steroid called androstane.
Silva (34-6) returned to the octagon last weekend, following a 13-month layoff, in which he defeated Diaz via unanimous decision. The win came after he suffered back-to-back losses.
Results of his pre-fight test were not available until Tuesday morning, which is why the fight was not canceled.
Diaz also had a positive test, but for marijuana in a post-fight drug test.
“Anderson Silva has been an amazing champion and a true ambassador of the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC, in Brazil as well as around the world. UFC is disappointed to learn of these initial results,” the UFC said in a statement.
Each fighter now faces potential fines and suspensions. Stay tuned…
