Nike draws inspiration from the Japanese rhinoceros beetle for this two-piece Air Max collection, dubbed the Kabutomushi Collection.
It features two iconic Air Max silhouettes, the Air Max Lunar1 and Air Max 95, which are re-imagined for this release dropping after Christmas. Referred to as Kabutomushi, the rhinoceros beetle is as intriguing as its outward appearance. With enormous strength, the beetle uses a protruding horn from its armored body to catapult predators from branches and logs to defend its territory.
Aesthetically, each silhouette features an iconic safari print decorated in a metallic finish, giving each design a textured, bug-like appearance. A mix of Black, Antarctica, Catalina and Team Orange tones represent the iridescent color palette of the beetle’s exoskeleton. For the Air Max Lunar1, we see premium leather and safari-print overlays adorning the upper, a two-toned, speckled Lunarlon midsole and see-through Air-Sole unit for dynamic cushioning. The Air Max 95 takes new life from its human anatomy roots, boasting leather side panels, representing muscles, which are highlighted in a combination of metallic safari print, while a spine-like midsole is subtle in black, integrating an Air-Sole unit in the heel and forefoot for extra comfort. The designs is completed with vibrant laces and lace loops, making the silhouette as eye-catching as the beetle itself.
The Nike Air Max Kabutomushi Collection drops Saturday (Dec. 27) online and at select Nike Sportswear retailers.
