Azealia Banks appeared on Hot 97 this week, where she went in-depth about culture, while blasting her rivals.
The Harlem rapper usually makes headlines for her Twitter beefs with peers like T.I. and Lil Kim, but tells Hot 97 hosts, Ebro and Peter Rosenberg, that she’s just misunderstood.
“Everyone’s got it all wrong,” Banks said. “I definitely have some really strong opinions and some really strong things to say about things, but I’m never trying to force my opinion.”
She then goes on to call out white rappers, accusing them of appropriating black culture and being rewarded for it. “That Macklemore album wasn’t better than the Drake record,” Banks stated. “That Iggy Azalea sh*t is not better than any f*ckin’ black girl that’s rapping today.
“The Grammys are supposed to be awards for artistic excellence… Iggy Azalea’s not excellent,” she added. “I have a problem when you’re trying to say that it’s hip-hop and you’re trying to put it up against black culture.”
Banks then goes on to downplay Iggy’s success, accusing her of jacking Nicki Minaj’s style. “Nicki Minaj over the past two, three, four years has done so much to create this social presence, like consciousness, and then here you go. She’s like Re-Up and Roman Reloaded, and here go f*ckin’ Iggy like Reclassified. It’s like a cultural smudging was what I see.”
Continuing her rant against Iggy, Banks says the Grammys are sending the wrong message by nominating her. “When they give these Grammys out, all it says to white kids is, ‘You’re great. You’re amazing. You can do whatever you put your mind to.’ And it says to black kids, ‘You don’t have sh*t. You don’t own sh*t, not even the sh*t you created yourself.’ And it makes me upset.”
How could they resolve this? Banks suggests: “Put [Iggy] in the pop category. Put her and Miley Cyrus in the same f*ckin’ box together. Don’t put her in hip-hop. Just because she’s singing, does not mean she’s rap music.”
She then moved on to T.I., calling him a “coon” for helping promote Iggy, while blasted his wife Tiny. “You out here trying to promote this white bitch. They got your wife on VH1 and that bitch can’t f*ckin’ read. You’re a f*ckin’ shoe shinin’ coon. How dare you.”
Feeling strongly about the topic, the rapper began to get emotional, as she said white America and capitalism have robbed her of her identity. “At the very f*ckin’, ya’ll owe me the right to my f*ckin’ identity, and to not exploit that sh*t. That’s all we’re holding onto, like hip-hop and rap.”
While Banks has obviously doesn’t like Iggy’s music, there are new artists she really likes, including Rae Sremmurd, DeJ Loaf, Big K.R.I.T., Young Father, and Manolo Rose.
