Gone Girl movie

Gone Girl ran away with the weekend box office, beating out last week’s top movie The Equalizer and new release, Annabelle.

The Fox thriller, starring Ben Affleck as a man whose wife goes missing, opened at No. 1, earning a $38 million debut.

Annabelle debuted closely in second, earning $37.2 million. The movie stars Ward Horton and Annabelle Wallis as new parents who bring the creepy porcelain plaything seen in last year’s haunted house horror The Conjuring into their home.

Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer slipped to No. 3 in its second weekend, bringing in another $19 million to take its domestic haul to $64.5 million. In it, Denzel reteams him with director Antoine Fuqua, who helmed 2001’s Training Day.

The animated The Boxtrolls lands at No. 4 with $12.4 million, while The Maze Runner closes out the top 5 with $12 million.

The other wide release, the Biblical thriller Left Behind, debuted in sixth place with $6.9 million.

That’s a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of the Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner comedy, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day; the action-horror Dracula Untold; and Robert Downey, Jr.’s The Judge.
