In his final home, New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter closed Thursday night’s (Sept. 25) game with the most fitting ending.
It was perfect. Jeter stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game, with a runner on second base and smacked a base hit into right field to drive in the winning run.
“Don’t cry,” an emotional Jeter said after the game, when asked what was going through his head when he stepped into the batter’s box for the final time. “To be honest with you, I don’t know how I played this game… I was all messed up.
“These last few weeks have gotten tougher and tougher,” he added. “I’ve told you members of the media that I didn’t wanna talk about it because I try not to think about it. It was very, very difficult, but it was all worth while.”
Jeter finished the night 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
