Apple hits a new record with its iPhone 6 release, selling more than 10 million units in the first weekend the new versions hit stores, reports Bloomberg.

The number helps the next-generation iPhone surpass the sales of last year's iPhone 5S and 5C, which sold 9 million smartphones.

"While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in the statement.

The new, larger iPhone 6, which boasts 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens, is helping Apple nab more of the marketshare from Samsung, HTC Corp. and other manufacturers of larger smartphones.
