Following his recent role as Hercules, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson unveils his next role as a superhero, playing DC Comics supervillain Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam. He’s the primary adversary of the DC superhero Shazam.
Rock revealed the news on Twitter Wednesday morning (Sept. 3): “‘Kneel at his feet or get crushed by his boot.’ My honor to become.. #BlackAdam.”
A studio spokeswoman confirmed Johnson’s character, telling TheWrap that screenwriter Darren Lemke (Jack the Giant Slayer) is attached to the project, which is being produced by New Line Cinema.
A director is still unknown, nor is a production date set.
When he says the magic word “Shazam”, Black Adam is transformed into a super-powered being. Like his superhero rival, he was given his powers by a wizard named Shazam in ancient Egypt. However, after becoming corrupt and overthrowing the pharaoh, he’s banished to the most distant star in the universe… and spends the next 5,000 years flying back to Earth where things have changed drastically.
It’s unclear how the character will be presented in the upcoming movie.
