Former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor is currently free on a $25,000 bond, after being jailed in connection with the shooting of his cousin.
According to ESPN.com, an incident took place the 36-year-old boxer’s home in Little Rock, Arkansas this week, in which he allegedly shot and hit his cousin multiple times.
Reports say Taylor’s wife Erica called 911 at around 7 pm EST, after the boxer got into an altercation with his cousin and another individual at his home. At some point, the boxer retrieved a handgun and fired several rounds, striking his cousin, who is alive and in serious condition at an area hospital. The other individual was not hit.
Police spokesperson Carl Minden said that when police arrived at Taylor’s residence, he was “very cooperative with our investigators. He was very calm, and there were absolutely no difficulties.”
He was taken into custody and booked on two felonies — first-degree domestic battery and aggravated assault.
Police are currently investigating.
The shooting comes just two weeks after Taylor (32-4-1, 20 KOs) inked a deal for a title shot at Soliman of Australia. The fight is scheduled to headline an ESPN2 boxing special Oct. 8 at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.
