The New York Jets announced Friday (Aug. 22), unsurprisingly, that Geno Smith will be their Week 1 starter.
The news follows Smith’s best game of the preseason, during the team’s 35-24 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.
The quarterback takes the job over Michael Vick, ending speculation, though Vick had said throughout the spring that he expected Smith to land the starting job.
The Jets’ second-round pick in 2013 finally gets the first public acknowledgement that he’s the full-time starter. He previously won the job by default as a rookie after Mark Sanchez suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last preseason. Sanchez was released in March, following two disappointing seasons.
Vick was signed to a one-year, $4 million contract to push Smith to show his talent, though he has remained the preferred choice.
