The Expendables 3

Despite the release of Sylvester Stallone’s action ensemble The Expendables 3, moviegoers still went out to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, helping it top the weekend box office in its second weekend.

TMNT earned $28.4 million this weekend to take its domestic haul to $117 million.

Expendables 3 opened with a disappointing $16.2 million to land at fourth place. It was the only film in the trilogy to be rated PG-13, and featured a star-studded cast of Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes and others. Apparently, it leaked online before its release.

The last two Expendables opened with $34.8 million (in August 2010) and $28.6 million (in August 2012).

Opening in third place with $17.7 million was the 20th Century Fox comedy, Let’s Be Cops, starring Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr., while the Lois Lowry adaption The Giver, opened with an estimated $12.8 million to land at #5.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy came in second with $24.7 million, bringing its three-week cumulative total to $222 million.

That’s a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, the Warner Bros. drama If I Stay, and the sports drama When the Game Stands Tall.
