This week marks the third-annual World Basketball Festival, this year’s festivities taking court in Chicago. To commemorate the occasion, Nike gave us time with apparel director Michael Smith, who discussed the recently unveiled Team USA 2014 Hyper Elite Uniform.

In development of this year’s uniform, the brand extensively interviewed players for feedback and incorporated it into the garment. In particular, moisture wicking Dri-FIT materials were added to the short’s left and right side panels, allowing players to comfortably wipe their hands dry, while a v-neck with a contrasting interior fabric was also added to allow players to wipe sweat from their face. Additionally, laser-cut perforations meant to increase ventilation can be found throughout the kit.

Slanted knee vents were designed to promoted flexibility around the knee area, and lastly, the uniform is eco-friendly and almost entirely constructed from recycled plastic water bottles (98%).

The Team USA Nike Basketball kit is available now at Nike Basketball retailers and, and will officially make its on-court debut the night the USA takes on Brazil in an exhibition at Chicago’s United Center.
