1977 HP-01 Smartwatch by Hewlett-Packard

Computer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard is gearing up for the release of a luxury smart watch with menswear designer Michael Bastian, but a peek into their archives reveals this gem.

Created in 1977 by a group of HP engineers is this early prototype of what today we call a smart watch called the HP-01.

The wristwatch featured a personal calculator, an alarm clock, a stopwatch, a timer, a 200-year calendar and the ability to change timezones, all commanded by 28 tiny keys on the watch’s face. It’s powered by three batteries and came with a pen with extendable stylus to help with using the tiny buttons.
