This past Tuesday (August 5), Nike celebrated the 30-year anniversary of Joan Benoit Samuelson’s gold medal performance in the world’s first Olympic Women’s Marathon Competition in 1984. Life came full circle for the Nike athlete, as she stood in the very same Coliseum where she made history three decades prior.

Things kicked off with a short Q&A segment, digging into Joan’s background and history as an athlete. As a token of appreciation for all she has done for women in running, she was given a small gift, her original personal journal.

The evening culminated with a 3-mile run with Joanie through the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and USC campus.
