Luc Besson’s Lucy proved that mind can overpower muscle, as it topped the weekend box office and outperformed Bretty Ratner’s remake of Hercules.

The sci-fi action, starring Scarlett Johansson, earned $44 million to easily outdo its competitors. In it, Lucy is accidentally caught in a dark deal, but turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic. Lucy opens internationally next week.

Hercules, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, brought in an estimated $29 million. In the film, the Greek demigod has his life as a sword-for-hire tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter seek his aid in defeating a tyrannical warlord.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes fell from the top spot to #3 with $16.4 million; The Purge: Anarchy landed at #4 with $9.8 million; and Planes: Fire & Rescue closes out the top 5 with $9.3 million.

According to the AP, the summer box office is still down by around one-fifth compared to last year, partly because Fast & Furious 7 was postponed from its July 11 release due to the death of actor Paul Walker.

That’s a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of the James Brown biopic Get On Up, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
