Due, in part, to the nation’s drug policy and three strikes laws, the U.S. locks up more people than anywhere in the world — 20% of the world’s prisoners. Today, new court rulings have declared that overcrowded prisons are unconstitutional, and due to the cost of incarceration, prisons are forced to let prisoners back out on the streets.

VICE was recently granted access to California’s Salinas Valley State Prison, which houses some of the most powerful gangs… and is considered one of the most maximum-security prisons in the country.

In the series, cameras get a tour and go inside what it’s like inside a facility that is on track to record more than 700 assaults this year, from rehabilitation to stabbings to transgenders to the gangs.
