Two months after outpointing Marcos Maidana in arguably the toughest fight of his career, Floyd Mayweather is likely set to face the Argentine fighter again… in a rematch on the previously announced September 13th date.
A formal announcement has yet to come, but the boxing superstar told LaTen Media before Sunday night’s (June 29) BET Awards that Maidana was his opponent.
“Sept. 13, back to business, Marcos Maidana-Floyd Mayweather, part II,” Mayweather said. “And then in May, I’m fighting in May and I’ll have a big surprise for ya’ll.”
Maidana manager Sebastian Contursi told ESPN.com on Tuesday (July 1) that no deal has been finalized just yet. “Still in the talks. Nothing confirmed on our side,” Contursi told said. “Hopefully, we’ll have a decision made in the next 4-5 days.”
Maidana took to Twitter that same day, saying they were in talks. “REMATCH in the talks. Respect for @FloydMayweather man of his word, yet only fist talk in the ring. #LATINPOWER,” he tweeted.
As for the “big surprise”, the Twittersphere is buzzing about the prospect for the long talked about super bout between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. One rumor points to the fight taking place in Dubai.
As for Pac-Man, there’s no official word for his next fight, but rumors say he’ll take on Amir Khan.
