Although J.J. Abrams is hard at work on the next Star Wars film, Episode VII, word has leaked that director Rian Johnson — who’s credits include the 2012 sci-fi, Looper — has been tapped to direct the next two films in the saga: Episode VIII and Episode IX.
The report from Deadline says that both Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Studios have yet to make an official statement on the news.
Since the news leaked, Johnson tweeted a short clip from the 1983 astronaut drama, The Right Stuff, in which Alan Shepard (played by Scott Glenn) says a short prayer as he is closed in the capsule of the first Mercury mission. “Dear Lord, please don’t let me f*ck up.”
It likely alludes to the pressure that comes with taking over such a storied film franchise.
A release date has yet to be set for Episode VIII, but Episode VII is scheduled for December 2015.
