While in New York starring on Broadway in Of Mice and Men, James Franco met a 17-year-old female tourist from Scotland named Lucy Clode, who was seeking an autograph. But, it went a little further, as the 35-year-old actor struck up a conversation with her that led to the two chatting on Instagram.
Franco would ask her age, if she had a boyfriend and even went as far as asking if she wanted to meet up at a hotel. Suspicious she might be getting catfished, Lucy asked Franco to provide her with a photo of himself with her name written on a piece of paper.
He did, which would lead to the two exchanging phone numbers, and then texting… which would all leak online.
Apparently, Franco wasn’t doing anything illegal because the legal age of consent in New York is 17 and 16 in Scotland, but it’s definitely embarrassing. Later, the actor addressed the situation on Twitter, writing: “I’M NOT! I HOPE PARENTS KEEP THEIR TEENS AWAY FROM ME. Thank you.”
The L.A. Times, however, points to the whole incident as possibly a publicity stunt for his upcoming film, Palto Alto, which has been screened at the Telluride Film Festival and opens in limited U.S. release May 9. In it, he plays a teacher with his eye on a young female student. What do you think?
