After being taken to school by Floyd Mayweather last September, Canelo Alvarez turned things around against Alfredo Angulo Saturday night (March 8), winning via TKO.
The one-sided fight was dominated by Canelo, who gave Angula a beating on the way to a stoppage with 47 seconds left in the 10th round.
By the fifth round of the fight, Angulo’s left eye was swelling — the same eye that was damaged in his knockout loss to Erislandy Lara in June. The swelling led to the referee stepping in, just as Alvarez landed a hard left uppercut.
Angulo disagreed, pleading his case after losing the biggest fight his career. “I’m upset because they should have let the fight go on,” Angulo said. “I’m frustrated. They should have let it go to the end. I’m fine. The referee was wrong this time.”
Alvarez improved to 43-1, while Angulo fell to 22-4.
“Tonight I was the best fighter,” Canelo said after the fight. “I definitely rebounded from the Mayweather fight with a strong performance. I’m very happy. I came here and did my job.”
