Ahead of its official debut at the 2014 CES next week, Ford unveiled Thursday (Jan. 2) the C-MAX Solar Energi Concept, a first-of-its-kind sun-powered vehicle.

The best part of the vehicle is that instead of powering its battery from an electrical outlet, it harnesses the power of the sun throuh its solar panel roof by using a special concentrator that acts like a magnifying glass, directing intense rays to solar panels on the vehicle roof.

Ford says the concept vehicle takes a day’s worth of sunlight to deliver the same performance as the conventional C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid. It gets a combined best mpg equivalent in its class, with EPA-estimated 108 MPGe city and 92 MPGe highway, for a combined 100 MPGe.
