Tokyo, Japan has been selected to play host for the 2020 Olympics in a vote by the International Olympic Committee on Saturday (September 7).
The Japanese capital beat out Istanbul, Turkey in the final round of voting 60-36, after Madrid was eliminated in an earlier vote where it initially tied with Istanbul.
According to the Associated Press, Tokyo billed itself as the “safe pair of hands”, during a period of global political and economic turmoil — a message that clearly resonated with the IOC. “The certainty was a crucial factor — the certainty that they could deliver,” IOC VP Craig Reedie of Britain said.
Tokyo last hosted the Olympics in 1964.
