Former heavyweight boxing champion, Tommy Morrison, passed away this weekend at the age of 44.
He died at an Omaha, NE hospital on Sunday (September 1) with his wife Trisha at this side, reports ESPN.com.
Morrison tested positive for HIV in 1996 before a fight with Arthur Weathers, which would be the end of his boxing career.
Despite the HIV announcement, he’d later deny having it at all, and even challenged its existence. His wife (whom he marred in 2011) echoed this telling ESPN.com recently that her husband had Guillain-Barre Syndrome, not HIV.
Morrison finished his career with a 52-3-1 record with 44 wins by KO. In 1993, he defeated George Foreman to win the WBO heavyweight title. Two fights later, he’d lose the title to Michael Bentt. His last notable loss came at the hands of Lennox Lewis in 1995.
Morrison also rose to fame in the 1990s for his role in Rocky V, portraying rookie boxer Tommy Gunn who is trained by Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone).
