The KAWS-Designed Companion Moonman For 2013 MTV VMAs

KAWS Companion Moonman - 2013 MTV VMAs

News about a newly-designed MTV VMAs Moonman hit the ‘net this summer, but they were officially unveiled on Sunday (August 25), during the 2013 VMAs at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center… where winners were handed out KAWS’ version of the iconic music award.

The design features original Moonman — originally designed by Fred Seibert in the early ’80s and inspired by Buzz Aldrin’s planting of the American Flag on the moon — reimagined as KAWS’ familiar Companion with the artist’s signature X-eyes and oversized crossbones.

As always, the Moonman holds a flag bearing MTV’s logo, and is also finished in a gun metal grey instead of the chrome we usually see.

A a 60-foot inflatable KAWS Moonman was also showcased on the stage — the largest Companion to date.
