The Red Bull BC One North American Finals put on an exciting display Saturday night (August 17), as 16 of the most established North American b-boys went head-to-head in an intense round of battles… with b-boy Gravity being crowned the winner at Warehouse Live in Houston.
The 16 participating b-boys took every chance they could to show how far the dance skills have come. Following four rounds of fierce competition, Gravity triumphed and earned his ticket to Seoul, South Korea, to compete this November for the world championship title.
“I knew I had the title in round one of the final battle, to be honest. I did everything I was supposed to do. B-boy Ben is nasty, I felt like he was trying to strategize on me so I had to strategize more and throw my best tricks at him,” he said of the evening.
Discussing the prospect of competing at the Red Bull BC One World Finals against all eight of the Red Bull BC One champions, Gravity said, “I didn’t get invited to the World Finals — I earned it — and nobody can take that from me. I’ve got a couple of months to prepare and I’ll be working double time but I’ll definitely be ready. Now is the celebration but the moment I’m back on home turf, it’s time to work.”
The all-star panel of judges, featuring Wicket, El Nino and Pelezinho, scored each competitor based on originality, technique and stage presence. Rakaa Iriscience emceed the event, while DJ Skeme Richards provided beats for the breakers throughout the battle.
The complete line up of North American finalists included B-Boy Ben (Las Vegas, NV), Dang (Houston, TX), Flexum (Santa Rosa, CA), Gravity (Brooklyn, NY), Jeremy (Houston, TX), Kareem (Sacramento, CA), Keebz (McAllen, TX), KNUCKLES (Philadelphia, PA), Lancer (San Diego, CA), Lil Rock (Fullerton, CA), MIJO (Milwaukee, WI), NastyRay (San Jose, CA), Starvin Sa-Ewl (Rialto, CA), Vicious (Montreal, Canada), VicNice (Orlando, FL), and Whorah (New York, NY).
