Drake and Rihanna

MTV announced the nominees for their 2012 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Tuesday (July 31), and it’s Drake and Rihanna leading the way with five noms each.

Among the five awards they’ve up for, the singer and rapper are both up for Video of the Year at this year’s show. Rihanna’s “We Found Love” will compete against Drake’s “Take Care,” which Riri is featured on (MTV only gives the nomination to the lead artist in the category).

Additionally, We Found Love” will also compete for Best Female Video and Best Pop Video, while the dance-heavy “Where Have You Been” scores Best Choreography and Best Visual Effects nods. And, Drizzy’s clip for “HYFR” garners him a nomination for Best Hip-Hop Video, while the Rihanna-assisted “Take Care” picks up Best Male Video, Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography.

After Riri and Drake, Katy Perry comes behind them with four nods, while Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, M.I.A., The Throne (Jay-Z and Kanye west), and Coldplay trail with three nominations apiece.

The 2012 MTV VMAs is slated to air live on September 6 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
