Wiz Khalifa took home top honors at mtvU’s Woodie Awards last year, and ironically, his Pittsburgh rap peer Mac Miller stepped in and cleaned up a year later at Thursday’s (March 15) Woodies in Austin, Texas.
The 20-year-old rapper walked away with two Woodies Thursday night, including the Performing Woodie and Woodie of the Year.
“I’ve worked so hard every day for the last five years and winning tonight means people recognize what I’m doing,” Mac said while accepting the honor. “I’m really thankful. This is a huge win for my fans and me.”
In addition to taking home trophies, Mac celebrated with a performance, hitting the audience with live renditions of “Party on 5th Ave.,” “Smile Back,” “Donald Trump” and “Loud.”
While Mac took home the evening’s big honors, Bad Boy signee Machine Gun Kelly walked away with the artist “Breaking Woodie” hardware.
“Thanks to my fans … This is an award the world didn’t want us to win, but we did it together. Congrats to the fans and f*** me,” said a humbled MGK.
The first-ever EDM Effect Woodie was awarded to Calvin Harris for the smash breakthrough hit with Rihanna, “We Found Love,” and Drew Barrymore shared the Best Video Woodie for her directorial work on “Our Deal (Extended Version)” from Best Coast.
Aside from awards, the show featured several live performances — including sets from Santigold, Skrillex, Aoki, and Chiddy and Lil Jon.
The 2012 mtvU Woodie Awards, hosted by DJ Pauly D and Dev, will air on Sunday (March 18) at 8pm ET/ 7pm CT.
