Weekend Box Office: ‘Lion King 3D’ Dethroned By ‘Dolphin Tale’

Dolphin Tale movieAfter two weekends at #1, "The Lion King 3D" has been dethroned by "Dolphin Tale."

The Warner Bros. family film climbed to #1 at the weekend box office, after debuting at #3 last weekend. The film earned $14.2 million in its second week to take its total to $37.5 million.

"Dolphin Tale" features Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman in a real-life story about strangers who team up to help an injured dolphin.

"Lion King" slipped to third place with $11.1 million. It now has a total of $79.6 million; while Brad Pitts' baseball tale, "Moneyball," held steady at #2 in its second weekend with $12.5 million.

At a close #4 was the cancer comic drama "50/50," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen. The film earned $8.85 million, and chronicles the stirring trials of a patient (Gordon-Levitt) fighting cancer with fierce spirit and great humor.

Sony's Christian-themed police drama "Courageous" with $8.8 million to take #5. It follows four policemen struggling to stick to their faith in God on the job and at home.

Debuting at #6 with $8.2 million was Universal's "Dream House", starring Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts.

The weekend's last new release was the comedy, "What's Your Number?" starring Anna Faris and Chris Evans. It flopped, landing at #8 with $5.6 million.

That's a wrap for this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the release of the Hugh Jackman action drama "Real Steel," and Ryan Gosling's "The Ides Of March."
