Former NBA All-Star, Mike Mitchell, passed away on Thursday (June 9), follow a two-year battle with cancer, reports FoxSports.com.
He was just 55 years old.
Mitchell played 10 seasons during his career — playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, before spending seven seasons with the San Antonio Spurs to close out his career, where he ranks sixth in franchise history with 9,799 points.
He was drafted in the first round by Cleveland in 1978, and finished his career with a 19.8 point average. His best season came in 1981, where he averaged 24.5 points per game, just over six rebounds, and earned a spot on the All-Star team.
Mitchell had a 22-year pro basketball career, which continued in Europe for more than a decade after his NBA career ended in 1990.
According to the Express-News, Mitchell had worked in recent years as a counselor for at-risk youth in San Antonio.
