Rango movieAnimated films seem to be all the rage at the box office these days and it was the same over the weekend when “Rango” beat out Matt Dmon’s mind-bending thriller “The Adjustment Bureau,” as well as the fantasy tale “Beastly”.

“Rango,” which features Johnny Depp as the voice of a Wild West chameleon sheriff, earned $38 million over the weekend to land at the top of the box office. The flm was the first animated feature from Industrial Light and Magic, the special effects studio founded by George Lucas in 1975.

Coming in at a distant second was Universal’s “The Adjustment Bureau,” starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. It debuted in the #2 spot with $20 million.

And in at ## was “Beastly”, with Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens. It earned $10.1 million.

Last weekend’s top film, “Hall Pass”, came in at #4 with just over $9 million, while “Gnomeo and Juliet” rounded out the top 5 with $6.9 million.

The weekend’s other wide release, Relativity Media’s throwback comedy “Take Me Home Tonight”, starring Topher Grace and Anna Faris, earned just $3.5 million, landing outside the top 10 at #11

That’s a wrap for this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the release of the sci-fi action “Battle: Los Angeles,” the animated “Mars Needs Moms”, and the drama “Red Riding Hood.”
