It’s been over two and a half years since Mobb Deep’s Prodigy was sent away to prison on a weapons charge, and his day of freedom is coming … this February says longtime producer, the Alchemist.
The rapper was sentenced to a three and a half year prison term for a third weapons possession conviction back in 2007, after pleading guilty to a gun charge stemming from an arrest in late 2006 when New York police caught him with a .22-caliber pistol.
The Alchemist recently sat down with MTV during Jay-Z and Eminem’s New York concert date, where he was serving as Em’s DJ.
During the interview, he spilled the beans on Prodigy’s upcoming release date.
“P comes home in February. It’s gonna be a very busy time. It’s amazing. He feels like he’s home already,” Alchemist told the network. “He’s in the best health he’s been in. He’s really excited.”
According to ALC, P is already getting back into work mode and the producer has been feeding him beats to get him ready to record.
“I’ve been sending him beats. Havoc is sending him beats. I e-mail them to his wife, and she puts it on some type of cassette. It’s like he’s in the studio, he’s just not recording,” ALC said.
In the months following his initial incarceration, Prodigy blogged from behind bars, writing letters to his wife on the outside who released them to the net. He even conducted a few interviews — one we did in June 2008, where we discussed several conspiracy theories with Prodigy who gave us his thoughts.
Since then, however, Prodigy has been rather quiet. Outside of a track called “Phone Tap”, released in March, we haven’t heard much. But, with the news of his release, we’re sure more news about one half of Mobb Deep is sure to come.
