Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was arrested Friday (September 10) in Las Vegas, and charged with felony theft related to a domestic violence complaint filed by a former girlfriend.
According to reports, the 33-year-old boxer was booked on a grand larceny charge Friday, and held on $3,000 bail, Las Vegas police Officer Bill Cassell told the Associated Press.
Mayweather’s lawyers, Richard Wright, said his client is accused of taking an iPhone from Josie Harris, the mother of three of his children.
She reportedly filed a complaint with police on Thursday (September 9), and sought a Family Court protection order alleging that Mayweather physically harmed her.
Harris claims Mayweather pulled her hair, punched her in the head and twisted her arm while she screamed for their children to call 911.
While Wright did not comment on the physical abuse claims, he did say Mayweather did not steal anything from Harris.
“He did not commit any grand larceny,” Wright told the AP. “Josie can’t find her iPhone. We’re attempting to find it or replace it. We’ll cooperate in the investigation. We expect to get the matter resolved.”
Mayweather himself has not addressed the situation, but his good friend rapper 50 Cent did via a series of Twitter updates (@50Cent).
He brushed off the reports, saying that Mayweather is just the victim of a baby’s mama looking to get paid.
“Another case of angry baby mama wanting money … She’s claiming he hit her but has no bruises,” 50 Cent wrote. “Floyd went to see his kids last night. If a fighter of Floyd caliber hits u, u would be bruised.”
Later, he added that he’d just spoke to the boxer, who wasn’t upset, and that a comment about his girlfriend’s poor housekeeping skills caused her to start “trippin.”
