As announced earlier this month, Cypress Hill’s annual Smokeout Festival is set to return in October, and Guerilla Union (the production company behind the event) has just announced more additions to the line-up.
While rockers Icubus are set to headline with their first North American appearance since 2007, new artist additions include Erykah Badu, Maldita Vecindad, Basement Jaxx, Collie Buddz and Los Rakas.
Badu will join as the festival’s only headlining female talent. The singer made a strong entrance into the musical scene with her 1997 debut, Baduizm, but most recently she made headlines when she dropped the music video for her single “Window Seat,” where she strips down to her birthday suit while taking a stroll in downtown Dallas.
Maldita Vecindad is best known for pioneering the “rock en espanol” sound by merging ska, rock, and traditional Mexican music into a genre of its own. They gained mainstream success with their album El Circo, released in 1989, and have toured with many high-profile artists such as INXS, Bob Dylan, and Jane’s Addiction. The group released Circular Colectivo in March of 2010, their first studio album in over 12 years.
Basement Jaxx is the house music duo, Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe. The name derived from a self-titled night club where guest DJs included Daft Punk and DJ Sneak. Their first album, released in 1999, quickly gained them international exposure and fame.
The Bermuda-based Collie Buddz sprung on to the scene in the late ’90s as one of the most buzzed about reggae/hip-hop fusion artists. His 1997 self-titled debut album landed at no. 1 on Billboard’s Reggae Chart.
And, Los Rakas is the up-and-coming hip-hop, reggae, and dancehall duo. They have graced the stage with many established artists, such as KRS-One, Dead Prez, and Mos Def.
These acts join an already stellar line-up that includes Deadmau5 “unhooked”, Slightly Stoopid, MGMT, Cypress Hill (performing their self-titled album in its entirety), Nas & Damian Marley, Atmosphere, and more.
“We are thrilled that so many amazing musicians and artists will be a part of our annual Smoke Out,” says co-producer B-Real. “It has always been our goal to showcase music that we respect and admire. This year’s line-up is our most powerful and diverse yet. I look forward to seeing all of them. It’s crazy to think that we still have a few announcements to make soon.”
The Cypress Hill Smokeout goes down October 16th at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California.
