Vibe Crowns Dr. Dre ‘Greatest Producer of All-Time,’ Dre Accepts Honor

Dr. DreAfter weeks of a bracket-style producer match-up, Vibe.com officially announced that Dr. Dre won their “Greatest Producer of All-Time” contest, after going head-to-head with DJ Premier in the final round and garnering 62% of the fans’ votes.

According to Vibe.com, there were a total of 189,425 votes in the six rounds, which they launched back in early April, which included a number of great producers in several categories, including Scott Storch, the Neptunes, Lil Jon, Kanye West, the Alchemist, DJ Muggs and Havoc of Mobb Deep, among others.

As expected Dre was the winner.

During his run in the contest, Dre beat out Atlanta producer DJ Toomp in the first round, fellow West Coaster DJ Quik in the second and De La Soul’s Prince Paul in the third. Then, the Compton vet edged out Bomb Squad in the Elite 8 round to go up against Kanye West in the final four, where a 68% advantage earned him a spot in the finals.

The Final Four were Dr. Dre Vs. Kanye West, and DJ Premier Vs. The Neptunes. Obviously, Dre took on Premier as mentioned and won.

The contest reached Dre himself, who humbly accepted the honor.

“I just found out that I got voted VIBE’s best producer of all time. That shit is incredible,” Dre told VIBE. “I’m a humble person and I would’ve never expected that, seriously. I just go in the studio. I try to do my thing to the best of my ability.”

Now that Dre is crowned “Greatest Producer of All-Time,” Vibe wants to know which era was his finest. You can vote among his NWA, Death Row, early Aftermath and modern day eras at Vibe.com.

  1. dre is the greatest hiphop producer of all time.if you cant accept the facts, then kiss……

  2. I predicted this outcome back when this contest was announced. Always dug Dre’s “clean” sound but truth be told Dre TOOK alotta producers beats like MEL-MAN,DAZ,HI-TEK,ect. and just “cleaned” em up and TOOK the production credit.. maybe Dre should won greatest “Engineer” of all time.. Real niggaz know Preemo the greatest “HANDS ON” from the MPC to the TECHNIQUE 12OO’S vibe outta touch& overlooked many of the greats too

  3. He’s deserve it to be the best after years with N.W.A.& later with Death Row Records.I’m Proud of Dr.Dre

  4. Dr. Dre vs. Dr. Premier? That’s no contest to me. The Neptunes, and Jermaine Dupri would have been better competition for Dr. Dre. No offense but I can only think of a few hits that DJ Premier has had. Dupri and Neptunes have countless hits and they are both still making them. I agree Dre should have won but the competition was kind of off!

  5. It’s cool to see him get the award, he deserves it, great producer. Cool to see him and diddy teamed up for the headphones, they sound good. West coast takeover? dre in everything, puff in get him to the greek lol

  6. NO HATE just facts.. see this is the problem I have with kiddies and old easily influenced dummies that been talkin that “I DONT BUY CDs OR VINYL NOMORE” BULLSHIT when you only download or buy bootlegs you lose information.. if you read the liner notes inside the CD,cassette,or record of N.W.A./Dr.DRE & Gangstarr/D.J.Premier projects you’d notice Dre has had MANY CO-PRODUCERS.. Premiers ONLY HAD 1 CO-PRODUCER EVER.. GURU. Dre takes others production credit

  7. Yeah, many greats..but I give it to him…he’s the greatest.

  8. Maybe they should have waited for detox to drop. How you gonna be called the best producer of all time and not released a album in 10 years? I thought my prayers had been answered when I heard it was coming out right after the new 50, but that was likely a boldfaced lie because 8 months later no detox. with no release in sight, looks like we won’t get it this year either. i know he sells a beat here and there but he’s lucky the world aint forgot about him.

  9. I can accept Dre as number one and Primo as number two. I personally prefer Primo over Dre, but both would make my top 2, no doubt.

@ the real Jay, if you think of only “hits”, then yeah, I can see why you don’t include Primo…Primo was makin’ classics back before hip hop was dominating the top 40. But, I’m gonna guess you’re a young head who doesn’t quite get why Primo is treated like a God in hip hop music. That’s ok, you’ll find out soon enough.

  10. I feel you philly-o. If you grew up thinking Nelly,Soldier boy and Gucci Mane da hottest, then dat lets da world know you’re not a hip hop fan,but a rap fan. Bet dude didnt know Primo produced Christina Aguelera,Brittney,Celine Dione,LL,and ur boy Dr. Dre as well. Quit hatin and start celebratin!!

  11. Dre no.1 is all cool with me ,but Vibe just aint credible enough to give out any kind of honor or price !

@ kane ,its all hiphop ,rap is just one element ,regardless waht cats nowaday like to tell us .its a fact ,cant changeit ! 1ne

  12. SMH ITS SO SO SO SAD THESE YOUNG CATS EITHER ARENT FAMILIAR OR DONT RESPECT TRUE HARDCORE HIP HOP CLASSICS SUCH AS Step In The Arena, Hard To Earn, Full Clip,&Moment Of Truth OR THE SLEW OF 12’Inches(now Im really speaking a foreign language)REMIXES & INSTRUMENTALS SUCH AS The Natural..PREEMO BLESSED US WITH!!! I STILL GET CHILLS TO THIS DAY WHEN I WATCH THE MASS APPEAL VIDEO AND PREEM ON THE WHEELS BLUNTED CUTTIN SHIT UP..
