The news of the legendary Guru’s death on Monday (April 19) shocked the hip-hop world, but it was his alleged final letter (released through his 7 Grand Records partner Solar) that raised eyebrows.
In the letter, said to have been penned by the rapper on his death bed, it was revealed that he had succumbed to terminal cancer, but there’s also mention of a non-profit as well as his alleged final wish that his “ex-DJ” (DJ Premier) not be attached to anything using his “likeness, events, tributes etc.” or “connected in anyway to my situation.”
Fans and musis industry peers questioned the authenticity of the letter, raising the question: why would a dying man would use his last moments to diss his long-time musical partner? Some feel that it seems a little suspicious.
Solar, however, claims it’s real. He took to his Twitter page (@Solar_7Grand) on Tuesday (April 20) to address the issue: “Guru made this statement from his own mouth and anybody saying different is insane with Hate!”
Members of Guru’s family released a statement just yesterday, refuting some of the claims of this letter. The most important piece the family reveals is that the late rapper was in a coma since the beginning of his hospitalization in mid-February and never regained consciousness up until his death.
The full statement is as follows:
The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka GURU for the outpouring of love, concern and support.
Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. GURU was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.
GURU suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. As a result, GURU was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness. Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.
GURU died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.
The family is not aware of any foundations established by GURU. We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive. Please look for further details from the family as they become available.
