DJ Babu, of the world-famous Beat Junkies and Dilated Peoples, is gearing up for the release of the second installment of his instrumental series, The Beat Tape.
The Beat Tape Vol. 2 follows-up the first installment released in 2007. This time around, the compilation consists of nearly 40 of the beatsmith’s soulful yet hard hitting compositions.
“There was no holding back with this album, I wanted to get the beats out no matter what. I wanted to give my fans a fresh body of music,” explains DJ Babu. “My mission with these instrumentals are to put some doubters to rest.”
While he has 10-plus years of production experience under his belt, most people know Babu as a world renowned champion DJ, an area he draws his sound and inspiration from.
“I want people to know my sound, all my beats come from a DJ mentality, so The Beat Tape Vol. 2 is a great outlet for me to showcase my production,” he says.
Over the years, Babu has achieved a sound that can’t be labeled by region or style. His camp says the upcoming project could be equally appreciated in the Bronx, Compton or anywhere in between, and call it “a treat for all the true B-Boy’s out there and a testament to the fact that hip-hop’s golden era is alive.”
Babu believes that the bridge between the golden era and today is still deeply rooted: “A lot of the DJs that I looked up to became great producers, from Dr. Dre to DJ Premier to Pete Rock. In a lot of ways, I’m trying to carry that same torch, where hip-hop is still rooted within DJing and records.”
The Beat Tape Vol. 2 is set to drop on February 23, 2010 on Nature Sounds Records.
Until then, you can always cop Babu’s 2007 album, Duck Season Vol. 3, a self-produced album that boasts tracks from MCs all across the globe.
