While Kanye West was the one who grabbed most of the headlines for his disruption of Taylor Swift’s moment at the VMAs a week ago, Lil Mama also gained a little attention for her unplanned appearance onstage for Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ show-closing performance of “Empire State of Mind.”
Jay had yet to really address the incident, but did recently while speaking with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez.
The rapper says it was in bad taste, and would’ve never done something like that to another artist.
“Me personally, I would never do that. I would never have the nerve to do that,” Jay told Angie. “We worked for weeks … we went to rehearsals, we did run-throughs, and we worked really hard on the performance to put on a show for people. To interrupt that moment for us, I don’t think that was the right thing to do.
“I actually think its the equivalent to what Kanye did to Taylor Swift, but nobody really talked about that because I’m not little sweet girl from the middle of America,” he continued.
As he continued his response, Jay explained that a lot of hard work went into the preparation of the VMAs performance, and for someone to ruin it wasn’t right.
“I’m cool with her being excited and all that, I’m just saying that you have to understand people put in work to make that performance happen,” he said. “The planning of it … if you look at those screen, we had to go to Yankees stadium, shot that live. There was a lot of planning that went into that performance. The intro … to disrupt that was a little out of line.”
Was he pissed about it though? Yes.
“Yea, I was a little angry to be honest. But you know? What am I gonna do? Fight Lil Mama? Have a tussle with her?” Jay joked.
