At The Movies: Horror Flicks Rule The Weekend Box Office — ‘Final Destination’ Wins Over ‘Halloween’

2009-08-31 - At The MoviesHorror flicks were the main draw at this weekend's box office.

At #1 was "The Final Destination", taking in $28.3 million, to win over last week's top film, "Inglourious Basterds," and "Halloween II".

The film was the fourth in the "Final Destination" franchise, in which a group of people dodge death, only to have it come after them to pick them off one by one. It is also played in 3D.

Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt's World War II saga, "Inglourious Basterds," slipped to second place this week with $20 million. So far, the film has brought in $73.8 million after 10 days in theaters.

In at #3 is Rob Zombie's sequel to his update of the slasher franchise about crazed killer Michael Myers. Although October 31st is almost two months again, "Halloween II" opened with $17.4 million.

Weinstein Co. plans to release "Halloween 3" in 3D next summer, Bob Weinstein told the Associated Press. While Zombie will not be back to direct, the next sequel will pick up from his story and give a new twist on slasher Myers, Weinstein said.

The weekend's other new wide release, "Taking Woodstock," opened a disappointing #9 with $3.7 million. It is a nostalgic look behind the scenes at the mammoth 1969 rock concert.

According to the AP, receipts ran at an all-time high, but attendance was off 2.2 percent compared with last summer factoring in this year's higher ticket prices.

Next weekend will see the releases of the new Sandra Bullock film "All About Steve," the comedy "Extract" starring Ben Affleck, and the action thriller "Gamer" starring Gerard Butler and Ludacris.
