Looks like the 1984 classic, “The Karate Kid,” will be getting the remake treatment, and Will Smith’s son, Jaden, will be the star.
According to Variety, the 10-year-old son of Will Smith is set to star as the next Karate Kid, confirming rumors that have circulated since September.
The movie will be produced by Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, and Jerry Weintraub (the man who launched the original series). However, a director has yet to be named, but Chris Murphy is currently writing the script.
The film is said to begin shooting next year in Beijing, China and other foreign cities, unlike the original, which was shot in sunny California.
Variety reports that the film’s plot will be similar to the original, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.
Young Jaden is already a practitioner of martial arts, so he is likely to be prepared for the karate aspect.
The original three films featured Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita.
