Over the past few months, MF Doom fans have questioned the validity of some of the mysterious emcee’s performances, some claiming that either his label or the rapper himself enlisted an imposter to stand-in during several spot dates.
While he’s been quiet regarding the allegations, he recently spoke about the situation in an interview with Wax Poetics magazine, recalling the first time he’d heard about the rumors following a performance last year.
“I did some show, wrecked it, girls climbing up onstage and sh**. That was the first time that happened, but we was rocking, right?” Doom recalled. “Somebody from the label was going to be there. I was like, ‘Cool, he saw the show, and it was wrecked.'”
A few days later, Doom heard the first of the rumors.
“Next couple of days, I speak to [the label rep that attended the show], and he was like, ‘Good show, but a lot of people are saying it wasn’t you,” the rapper revealed.
MF Doom explained that he lost a considerable amount of weight last year, and his physical appearance contributed to rumors that an imposter was doing his shows.
“I lost 59 pounds last year on some healthy sh**,” Doom explained. “I’m out there busting my ass, and n****s is still saying that sh**? N****s is caught up in the character part.”
Still, despite fans’ reactions, Doom said that whether or not a fake MF Doom was performing, the music is what matters, and not the visuals of him on stage.
“Looking at it has nothing to do with what it sounds like,” he tells the mag. “A blind person could be at the show and feel it clearly, but don’t see nothing of it. Don’t matter what the sh** look like. Look, was n****s rockin’ or was n****s rockin’?”
