With word of Kanye West’s Graduation outselling 50 Cent’s Curtis 2 to 1, 50 Cent gave a few different explanations as to why recently. While speaking to Billboard, the rapper said that West got the upperhand when MTV gave the rapper more airtime, but also blamed his record label for their promotion efforts in comparison with Def Jam: “As far as the VMAs were concerned, Kanye received the upper hand. I ain’t going to front. He had four looks — his song ‘Stronger,’ his new record ‘Good Life,’ he had a performance with Soulja Boy, ‘Crank [That],’ and then he came out with me. So I feel like Def Jam is doing a better job of promoting the CD than Interscope. Interscope is just relying on my base and the actual music. I was on the VMAs for one minute and 20 seconds. I should’ve just stayed home.” … Kanye West made an appearance at Sunday’s (September 16) Emmy Awards, where he spoofed his bad attitude about losing award show trophies. The rapper and actor Rainn Wilson, of “The Office,” did a mock version of “Don’t Forget the Lyrics!” with Wayne Brady overseeing their showdown. “Whoever loses this competition will retire from show business,” Brady said, referring to the album sales battle between West and 50 Cent. …

Hip-hop couple, Nas and Kelis, were in Las Vegas on Friday (September 14), celebrating the rapper’s (real name: Nasir Jones) 34th birthday, and did so at The Venetian Hotel and Casino. According to reports, the couple began in the evening with dinner at TAO Bistro, then moved on to the Xbox Oasis at TAO Beach, where her Nas cut slices of a jukebox-shaped birthday cake and, according to Hollyscoop.com, popped the corks on bottles of Ace of Spades Armand de Brignac champagne, sent to the soiree courtesy of Jay-Z. …

Also on Friday (September 14), actor/singer Jamie Foxx was honored with a star on the city’s legendary Walk of Fame. Like he’s done in the past, the actor praised his grandmother. “My grandmother’s got to be spreading her wings and flying around in heaven, just so happy,” he said during the star unveiling. …

Black Eyed Peas’ member, Taboo, was forced to pull out of the group’s Stockholm, Sweden, show on Thursday night (September 13) after becoming ill. According to reports, Fergie told fans that the rapper was suffering from “food poisoning” and had been taken to hospital. Before the show, Will.i.am told reporters, “Taboo is sick, he has been taken to the emergency room… I hope he will be OK.” Local newspaper Expressen reports that Taboo was discharged from hospital later that night and spent Friday recovering in his hotel room. …

Master P spent an hour on Thursday (September 13) speaking to nearly 800 students at Monroe Middle School in Charlotte, NC about the importance of education, good financial management and a vision for success. Not only did he give advice, but also expressed regret for the tone of his earlier work, according to the Associated Press. The rapper/entrepanuer is currently touring the country in support of his new book, Guaranteed Success, which is designed to guy the reader to success, sharing wisdom and experience that he has gained in his journey from rags to riches. …

Snoop Dogg, Talib Kweli, Mobb Deep, and DMC are among the acts slated to come together on November 29 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York for the J.A.M. Awards, a Jam Master Jay- and Run-DMC-inspired event intended to reflect the positive aspects of rap. The event — being put on by Hot 97, the Jam Master Jay Foundation for Music and other organizations — will be co-hosted by DMC, who said in a statement that it “is not designed merely for music fans, but also for people who want to see hip-hop answer its critics with a resounding voice of hope and inspiration.” Eminem has also donated money for the cause, and the shindig will also feature Raekwon, Papoose and other to-be-named artists. …

Prince is planning to sue eBay, YouTube and other websites as part of an effort to “reclaim the Internet,” according to the MediaGuardian.co.uk. Lawsuits pertaining to his material will be launched in the U.S. and U.K. through the anti-piracy firm Web Sheriff, which represents Prince. Over the course of the past two weeks, the artist’s legal reps have asked for the removal of more than 2,000 videos that are alleged to have been uploaded illegally online. Web Sheriff Managing Director John Giacobbi said Prince “wants to create a template for other artists” but that he “doesn’t really want to go around suing people — he’d much rather people just respected his rights. He will be victorious.” …
