It is actually healthy for the rap game to have a person like Twista, Too Short, Andre 3k etc... to come into the rap game and diversify it. If everyone sounded like Nas then rap would die out. First of all, I think people use hip hop as a scapegoat for most of the problems in various communities around the country. Hip Hop is a culture, Rap is a branch of the music industry. Soulja Boy didn't kill Hip Hop. Hip Hop possibly saved that young man. HE'S 17 YEARS OLD PEOPLE!!! He's a child who made a childish song that other children enjoy. I have two children myself (yes, I came up in the old school and still listen to various forms of rap). They like to do the Soulja Boy dance and my wife and I do it with them for fun. That's all it is. Fun. There's no social commenentary in it so it's not meant to be taken seriously. It is what it is. He made a lot of money off of it. Good for him. Ice T should be schooling him on what to do next. Ice T became more sucessful and mainstream after his rap career ended (yes, it's over Ice) by making his next move into movies. Many older folks love to talk down on younger folks who many times just don't know what direction to take. That's the problem.
