Young Lloyd is back with his latest album, Lessons In Love, which many are already claiming is an underrated album. Irv Gotti, Henry "Noonie" Lee and the teacher of all these lessons, Mr. Lloyd Polite Jr. himself, executively produced the record.
At first listen, one might regard this compilation of teachings as basic and forgettable. Like all things that have the potential to be great; it takes time to truly appreciate something good. Now this album is no 12 Play (R. Kelly's sultry sophomore output) by far, but nonetheless, it should still be recognized for shying away from the limp mainstream R&B tracks that are currently in rotation.
Upon listening to this album, it's hard to think back to a time when R&B artists released baby-making tracks into the airwaves that had people running for their bedrooms.
Vibe magazine recently commended Lloyd for being one of the very few R&B artists who has dared to maintain highly suggestive lyrics during R&B's current soft patch. With songs such as "Sex Education," "Year of the Lover" and "Have My Baby", Lloyd resurges the libido-lifting lines that were considered standard in any rhythm and blues track.
With many potential singles on the album and a versatile array of song concepts, each track, or lesson rather, brings something different to the record. From "I Can Change Your Life," which is dedicated to ladies in bad relationships, to the club-banger, "Girls All Around the World," featuring Lil' Wayne, this is definitely a noteworthy opus from the Georgia native.
Though Lloyd leaves much to be desired in terms of his vocal ability, his lush lyrics coupled with outstanding production by Polow da Don, Eric Hudson and Jasper Cameron, create a stimulating soundscape. It's refreshing to finally hear a more virile lothario like Lloyd.
