"I thought I told you that we won't stop," these are the famous words spoken by Diddy and his Bad Boy crew. Bad Boy has proven to be one of the top record labels of all-time and is still going strong today. We already know about Danity Kane, Day26 and Donnie from the "Making The Band" series. But before they were thrust into the spotlight, there was Cheri Dennis. After grinding in the music industry for almost ten years, Cheri Dennis finally gets her time to shine.
Produced by Diddy, Harve "Joe Hooker" Pierre and Conrad "Rad" Dimanche, In And Out Of Love has given Cheri some much needed attention. But can she live up to the level of success that Bad Boy usually produces? Cheri Dennis thinks so.
The first single off the album is her smash hit, "I Love You," featuring Jim Jones and Yung Joc. This is by far the best song on the album. It has an infectious up-tempo arrangement and its catchy lyrics has all the ladies singing, "I love you (hey, hey), so don't break my heart." Even though two rugged rappers are featured on the track, the song still has an overall feminine appeal.
"Portrait of Love" features verses from Yung Joc and Gorilla Zoe and is another catchy mid-tempo song. But when compared to the aforementioned track, it's a bit of a disappointment in terms of getting more from Cheri's voice.
Cheri brings us back on "Dropping Out of Love," sampling the Notorious B.I.G's "Sky's the Limit." Cheri makes this classic her own, as she sings about how hard it is to stay in her current relationship and contemplates dropping out of love and moving on. Cheri displays a powerful range in her voice, while at the same time keeping it smooth and sexy to go along with the beat. Her strong vocals, however, get a bit overshadowed on "Pretend and Spaced Out," due to the fast tempo of the beat, which doesn't mesh well with her voice.
Though she hit a few bumps along the way, Cheri's overall talent shines through. "Ooh Ooh" is a perfect track for someone who is trying to make a stamp in the music industry. Not only is this the melody soothing, with its harp harmonies in the background, but it also complements her voice perfectly.
In And Out Of Love takes on many different styles; and even though some showcase Cheri's vocals better than others, given the right beat Cheri can make anything sound good. Cheri Dennis has been around for sometime and it doesn't look like she will be leaving anytime soon. So, I think it's safe to say it's Bad Boy baby!
