Trey Songz: Trey Day

After many release date changes, the Prince of VA is back and is more mature than ever before. Trey Songz' sophomore album is not a star studded LP like many others in the music business. Bun B and Dipset's Jim Jones are the only two rappers that have the pleasure of gracing the album. Cleverly titled Trey Day, the album is just that -- all about Trey.

Trey Songz is all about having fun this time around, and for the first time ever, we hear Trey spitting verses in "Long Gone Missing" and his first single "Wonder Woman."

"Your face is amazing blazing hot like Cajun, and all I need is a minute / Please no gimmicks / ya' tellin' me to chill on the real or take a trip to Satan / Sent me to hell wit it / Then I yelled wit it / Dude to hell wit ya crew." Now don't get it twisted, Trey is no rapper, but he does a pretty decent job. And even with the annoying background music, Trey's vocals are still a force to be reckoned with.

Trey gets his grown man on with the next two tracks "No Clothes On" and "Sex For Yo Stereo." "No Clothes On" is a catchy, mid-tempo song that has some hip-hop flavor to it, and "Sex For Yo Stereo" is just what it sounds like: "Girl you wanna' bump it / Turn it up don't turn me down / promise that you'll love it / now put your hands on the radio / don't be scared to touch it / imagine I was there baby pullin' on your hair / got some sex for yo stereo." Trey's message is very clear, but in a mature and classy way. Which girl wouldn't want to, you know, listen to that song?

Hitting the halfway point, the second single, "Can't Help But Wait," is next. Trey is feeling this girl, even though he knows she is still committed to an unhappy relationship, but he can't help but wait till she sees herself for who she truly is.

Up to this point, Trey Day is worth the wait, but it takes an unexpected turn with "Fly together," featuring Jim Jones. This track doesn't seem to help the album. Although this up-tempo song starts out strong with a catchy beat that ties in perfectly with Trey's high pitched-vocals, when the chorus hits, it does not mesh with the rest of the song. Particularly, the words "So fly" seem to be dragged out a bit too long.

Despite that minor set back, Trey Day finishes strong with "Role Play" and "We Should Be." "Role play" is another sensual song that samples an arcade like sound. When you listen, you can picture a candle lit bedroom, perfect for any lovers. While finally, on "We Should Be," which closes the album, Trey's soothing voice makes love to the music. If you ever want to hear a real love song, this is it. "Baby you know it's such a beautiful thing / the way that we be doin' our thang, when we be doin' it / we should be makin' love." Trey adds his own rendition of "Oh's" that is sure to make any girl fall to her knees.

Trey Songz is clearly an underrated singer compared to R&B singers like Chris Brown and Ne-Yo. We already know Trey can sing, but he adds something extra with this album. At just 22 years of age, he is more experienced and is not afraid of letting it be known. However, though this is a great album for Trey, it's hard to say if this was the breakout album he was looking for. It looks like he'll have to wait.. a bit longer for his true "day" to arrive.
