Slim Thug Presents Boss Hogg Outlawz: Serve & Collect
Words by Renita Jones Rating: 3.0 out of 5.0
From underground superstar to one of Houston's brightest stars, Slim Thug has hustled his way into the seat on top of his his own empire. Now, after garnering fame with last year's Already Platinum, the Boss presents his Boss Hogg Outlawz with their debut, Serve & Collect. And to let his homies get some shine, he leaves himself off of six out of fifteen tracks.
Slim Thug starts the set out with the solo track, "We Boss Hoggin'," letting the world know what the term is all about. He spits verses that would basically sum up the life of Boss Hogg from the "Dukes of Hazzard." Starting out with the clichéd the game is to be sold, not told guideline, the Boss -- in a shy subtle sort of way -- explains Boss Hoggin'. "I'm a soldier / can't let these n----s stop me / it feel like the whole world trying to baller block m e/ I got cameras around my eyes / I can't sleep," Slim Thug spits during his verse.
Throughout Serve & Collect, there is not one track where all members are present, but it is evenly divided, so that every member gets his individual shine. Only Slim Thugg, C Ward and PJ were fortunate enough to have solo tracks.
The gang uses Southern Playalistic groove with the solo track "Rollin'" featuring C Ward, where the rapper flows just like the Outkast reminiscent song, "We rollin candy cars / fresh you see us swangin' man e/ We sippin' on that bar and we leanin' mane / I got diamonds on my wrist and diamonds all in my grill / Houston Texas where I live / and I keep it treal."
Other standouts include the PJ solo track "It's That PJ," group cut "Back To Front" and Rob Smallz assisted slow jame "Cheating."
Much like Slim Thug did with Already Platinum, the Boss Hogg Outlawz prove that Houston have a waiting list of talented rappers waiting in the wings. Because of the variety on their debut, they are able to keep your attention from track to track, even though a few we could have done without. But overall, the Boss Hogg Outlawz truly did their job in Serving & Collecting the attention of their listeners.
