After Diddy's failed attempt to bring fans a Hot Boys replacement with the group, Boyz N da in the Hood, BG -- an original Hot Boy -- is using the open lane to give fans what they've been missing. Introducing his fans to a new set of young cats on the rise, BG finishes his contractual obligations with Koch Records in the form of The Chopper City Boyz. Comprised of Gar, Sniper, VL Mike and B.G.'s younger brother Hakim, the Chopper City Boyz are presented as a group throughout the CD, but they lack the chemistry it takes to sound like one. On the other hand, this being their debut effort, We Got This indeed captures the essence of the distinct New Orleans gangsta rap sound.
We Got This starts off with "Taking Over," a very long intro that samples New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and has each of the Boyz ranting about their lives on the streets. Though they're seemingly all over the place declaring this or that, "Taking Over" should not be seen as the backdrop for the whole record; it's better seen as their excitement about having an album out. Fans expecting to hear BG dominating the album are in for a surprise; with this venture he steps aside and gives his crew a fair shot at establishing their own lane(s). He does show up on a few tracks like their debut single, the David Banner produced "Make Em Mad," to give his fans reason enough to trust his ear for talent.
While Gar, VL Mike, and Sniper standout quite a few times throughout the CD, you can clearly hear BG's influence on them all. Don't be misled, this CD does have some bangers like "All We Got," Thorough Street N----" and if the ladies need to know what it takes to be the proper jump-off, "What I Like About Her" gives a detailed list of requirements. VL, the most aggressive of the four, keeps a consistent theme with his standout performance on "It's Real." On "Heart Of A Killer" and "Chopper City," Sniper and Gar try their hand at more complex flows. They (Sniper and Gar) often hit and miss when trying to be lyrical, but their attempts to be seen as more than thug life promoters is not to be overlooked. Being the younger brother of BG, regrettably Hakim's solo effort, "Crucial Sh--" doesn't quite meet expectations.
After a vodka induced second/third listen, We Got This is sure to be a favorite for the frequent club hopper and die hard BG fans.
