Common Market: Common Market
In a time where conscious hip-hop seems to be making a subtle comeback thanks to projects by the likes of Talib Kweli and newcomer Lupe Fiasco, Common Market emerges as if on cue. Their 14 track self-titled album is filled with thoughtful lyrics and mesmerizing beats that will place all underground listeners in a state of pleasant nostalgia for music as we used to know it. Nothing about this album is commercial; in fact you may not ever hear a song from producer Sabzi and lyricist RA Scion on your local radio station. But, from top to bottom, Common Market is pleasing to anyone who appreciates intelligent rhymes and subject matter.

The duo began working on this album after their previous collaboration for RA Scion's 2003 solo effort, Apostrophe - The EP. But, to hear the chemistry between the two, you might think they've been a team for much longer. The lyrics seem to fit perfectly over Sabzi's beats, as in the opening track "Re-fresh." Scion delivers a tricky flow about relieving life's stresses on a Motown-sounding tune complete with old-school horns. Likewise "Push," a song about the pressures of staying true to your identity finds a striking delivery over an equally present production laced with piano chords. All in all, many of the tracks on the album follow this complementary style.

While you probably won't stop bobbing your head to Sabzi's genius, there is something to be said about the lyrical content of Common Market. Scion seems to be an artist you have to listen to several times in order to really understand. For example, in the bible referenced and somewhat challenged "Crossblow" he spits, "The Orthodoxy had interpretation liberties exclusively / Stone-throwin' finger pointing bitches -- you ain't new to me." However, not all of his tracks are as confrontational. The sweet "Love One" is an ode to the four women in his life (mother, sister, daughter and wife) set to an upbeat and happy-go-lucky tune. And the inspiring "Succor MC's" appears at first glance to be a diss record, but turns into a wise sounding Scion supporting the efforts of younger artists in the game. And though most people have probably never heard of the Kentucky native, his delivery is consistently strong and skillful, making his opinions valid.

With a public endorsement from hip-hop legend KRS-One during their CD release party, Common Market seems to be already turning the heads of some of the greats in the game. And rightfully so; this project is smart from top to bottom. Every song has a message and every beat is intoxicating. So, while their newness in the industry and lack of big-name cameos seems to be working against them (a formula that works to the advantage of many new artists), their sheer creativity and overall appeal is unmatched.

Common Market is definitely an album worth constant rotation in your CD and MP3 players, and worth telling all your conscious appreciating friends.
